Due to COVID-19, students have gone anywhere from learning at home, to online, to socially distanced in a classroom, or even a hybrid of at home and at school. Being back in the classroom full time and still following mask mandates and social distance guidelines can be incredibly difficult for young learners. Having students come back from the variety of learning environments they endured in the last year during the pandemic, it's important to create a stable and comfortable classroom setting for them now that they are back in school.
Students need a comfortable classroom environment that allows for movement and choice in order to manage their energy and focus in a safe and productive way. By having wiggle chairs, cushions, foot bands, and fidgets in the classroom, students will be able to channel their energy in a way that is more constructive to their classroom learning. I've seen the way many of my students work better on the floor or after being allowed to wiggle. Having tools that will consistently aid them in directing their focus will be benefitial to easing their anxiety about being in a classroom all day. I believe that by giving them the choice to discover what they need to learn better with the help of these tools, it will enhance their learning to be much more meaningful and effective.
