These books will be able to put our classroom on the path to our own library that is reflective of my student's cultures. My classroom is currently lacking in a fully functional library and we rely on hand-me-downs from other teachers and things I can purchase through thrift stores. My students are struggling readers but have a deep passion for books and the stories they tell. Every book that is placed on this list is hand selected for what they represent to each of my students.
I want to afford my students the opportunity to see that reading is not something out of reach for them. My students will be able to see their lives reflected in our own classroom library. With the scanner purchased they will also be able to check out books from our classroom to take to their home and read with their families as well.
Although my students have many labels, I believe that they are capable of anything. I just have to provide them with the tools to be successful. That includes providing them with a wide range of stories that mirror their lives and cultures so they see that nothing is impossible!
