For lots of reasons most of my kids have attendance challenges of one kind or another and most are beyond the control of my students. For that reason, I have to do better when it comes to delivering instruction. It is not enough to teach and then decide if they miss class it’s up to them to learn on their own.
So, the plan is to make videos of all the lessons. That way the kids will have access to them whenever they can make it work. They can do class their way. In their time. They can pause, rewind, see it again. They can redo a lesson even if they where in class to get it the first time. They can have class in the middle of the night when they’re up with the baby, or when they get home from work, or on Sunday when there’s no practice and no games.
What online learning in the pandemic has taught us is that video classes need to have three things. The kids need to be able to see, on one screen, my face, the workspace (whiteboard, graphing program, etc.) and the resource materials (textbook, articles, other student’s work, etc.)
I want to use the surface pro and a program called Camtasia Studio to make the videos. I am inspired by Sean Connally of Mr Connally’s math on youtube and would like to make videos similar to his.
The materials I’m asking for will be used to make videos for classes for years to come. It will definitely help a lot right now with all the online learning, but the project is not limited to this unique time. After we all return to in person school the videos will continue to provide open access to students with ongoing attendance challenges.
