Literature plays an essential role in the development of children. Books can be a window into a world they have never experienced before. Furthermore, children are able to visualize themselves in the stories they read. This can foster a sense of belonging, recognition and validation. Therefore, representation in literature matters. Creating a diverse, inclusive classroom library will make my readers of today, the leaders of tomorrow. This library will give students access to a wide variety of fiction and nonfiction texts. My goal is to foster a love of reading, entertain and inform while also affirming students' identities and exposing them to the values, viewpoints, and historical legacies of others. Given the state of our world today, this exposure can help push for changes that go well beyond our classroom. Their voices will be heard.
