My students need quality mentor texts to help them identify good writing and what sets it apart from "just okay". This project is a grade-level collaboration and collective effort to grow our students into confident writers. By closely reading Patricia Polacco's "The Mermaid's Purse", my students will be able to reflect on the strategies Polacco used to bring her words to life so they can apply them to their own writing.
It is important that students each have a copy of this book, so they can read, reflect upon, and analyze the text at their own pace. Also, due to COVID-19 restrictions, they are not able to share materials. The students will refer to the book often as they carefully study the writing strategies the author utilized such as imagery, word choice, and tone. The students will then use Polacco's work as a model for their own narrative writing pieces.
Since "The Mermaid's Purse" is based on actual events, it will not only serve as a mentor text, but it will also motivate my students to read and work together as they see the the power of community in Polacco's story.
