My students are a diverse group of children from many different countries all over the world. As an ESOL (English as a second/other language) teacher, it is my goal to make every single one of these students feel welcome and engaged in the classroom.
All of these students come from different backgrounds, but something that I find they have in common is that they are often hungry during the school day and that being able to provide them with healthy snacks is a necessity. Food insecurity is a major issue in this city, and I want to be able to help my students feel comfortable, safe, and as ready to learn as possible. It's difficult to do your best in school on an empty stomach.
I have found that if I'm able to give my students snacks, it helps them to feel less drowsy and focus more. They really appreciate it, and they understand that I understand a little about what they're going through. The snacks I'll be providing them are healthy and will give them the necessary energy to make it through the day!
