Manipulatives have been proven to make abstract ideals more concrete and therefore more attainable. My students struggle with fractions and reading passages. I have developed times for math and reading stations throughout the day. This is where these will be implemented. Fraction strips to review and strengthen skills and literacy tiles to broaden comprehension.
These manipulatives will be used by both in-person and virtual learners in a hybrid 5th grade classroom. Our campus is a free charter school for at-risk children, so we lack the resources of a large district. Also, considering the learning gaps that COVID and the 2019 school year produced, will help students overcome and prepare for the upcoming state assessments.
