Because of the COVID-19 safety restrictions, students must be limited to use their own pencils and markers for hygiene. The need for the requested markers and pencils is to facilitate the students to add color to their work at home and at school. During our Code Red, students can use the colored pencils and markers at home; and during Code Yellow, students will be equipped to have their personal-colored pencils and markers at school. They all have their own box of crayons.
We have two tubs of various markers in the classroom that we can't use to honor COVID safety; and I provided each student with two new markers at the beginning of school, which made it very limited for them - it seemed so sad to me.
We are working on a one-year project about the village we live in. They are writing sentences and drawing pictures of local animals, birds, fish, boats, their home, our school, trees, mountains, their family and other subjects of interest to them. With the new pencils and markers, I believe the drawings will reflect more of their imagination and details. Their writings and drawings will be glued into a journal that will be a keepsake for their 2nd grade year. If time allows, we will continue to write and draw about an imaginary village or city with same topics.
