Part of my curriculum for each class I teach is leadership. We are one of a handful of schools in the state that participate in 鈥淣o Child Sleeps on the Floor鈥 project through FFA. We make beds for children in foster homes or children that are just in need. It is an eye opening and humbling experience for our students and it helps others. We鈥檝e built 14 beds over the past three years, they鈥檝e gone to children we know or children we may never know. I enjoy seeing the pride students get when they use their hands to build something, especially something that helps others. There are so many instances in the classroom that I could think of for this topic. When I close my eyes and think about what teaches kids the most, it鈥檚 not from a book or word for word from a curriculum. It鈥檚 building and providing a basic need for children.
Being an agricultural educator is more than just a job to me, it is my passion. Seeing the kids that are viewed as 鈥渘onacademic鈥 come in my agricultural mechanics use hands-on activities to apply and combine skills from my classes and traditional academic classes. I teach my students the basics of woodworking, using tools, reading tape measures, and calculating project costs. More importantly, I want them to learn to be better people, kinder people, compassionate people, people with purpose. The mattresses will go to children in need, because what good is a bed without a mattress?
