I believe that building a community in a classroom is vital for students' academic success, but also their social-emotional well-being. It's harder to foster relationships when kids are separated around the room. That is why I choose to gather my students throughout the day on the floor so we can talk, collaborate, listen, and often share a lesson. At my new school, we only have tile floors in our classrooms. I don't want to ask the kids to sit on a cold hard floor, but with my $75 supplies budget, I cannot afford to buy a rug for my classroom.
