As students return to school after a year of remote learning, it will be more important than ever to address their social-emotional needs. To help my students adjust to the many changes they are experiencing we will be using lessons from Beat the Odds, a program that helps students build social-emotional skills through drum circle activities.
Group drumming promotes empathy, healing, non-verbal communication, unity and connection. During drum circle activities, students play rhythms, chant, and make music together. While they are engaged in the fun of music making they also learn to harness creative energy, calm and center themselves, express emotions, practice self-regulation, and develop leadership skills.
