The Nevada Academic Content Standard fulfilled by this project will be the ELA, Grade 2, RF.2.4, Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. ELA, Grade 2, RL.2.10, By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories and poetry, in the grades 2-3 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range. ELA, Grade 2, RI.2.10, By the end of year, read and comprehend informational texts, including history/social studies, science, and technical texts, in the grades 2-3 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range. S.S., Grade 2, SS.2.11, Identify how individuals have made a difference in the communities in which they live. S.S., Grade 2, SS.2.19., Describe the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.
One issue I have noticed with our elementary students during COVID times, is the reluctance to read independently for self growth and strengthen comprehension skills.
Research shows how important it is to prepare students for embracing the challenges of the future; while also acknowledging and addressing the current challenges of daily life. Research also states the importance of promoting daily independent reading to reinforce the skills and strategies that students are learning.
