Many young students enter kindergarten lacking in fine motor development and because of this they have difficulties completing writing/drawing activities, self-help skills, cutting activities, and turning of pages for a book. By adding to our library and broadening our fine motor/sensory play items, students will have an opportunity to develop these skills.
By using fine motor manipulatives and engaging stories, students will be able to work on strengthening those muscles which control fine motor skills. When we strengthen these muscles we see student growth in areas of writing, reading, math, social-emotional development, and ability to work independently, which leads to academic achievement and students’ confidence being improved upon.
With these engaging activities, that require fine motor use, students who are typically reluctant to participate will sustain their attention on these tasks. With a variety of stories to grow our library, students will develop their vocabulary, comprehension, and stamina for reading, while reading from a variety of genres.
