When I think of making a difference in our student's learning, I think of teaching those skills a student will need to be successful after graduation. Society, and what society values, is changing at an ever-rapid pace. If we are to make a real difference in our student's learning, we must prepare our students for jobs that haven't even been invented yet. Preparing the students of today, for the careers of tomorrow requires a multi-faceted approach. In order to become a contributing member of society, every student needs to have mastered the 5C's: Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Citizenship. To begin with, students must learn how to communicate effectively. Students will use 3D print technology as a means of self-expression, as well as a means to share ideas and collaborate on classroom projects. Next, if students are to be successful in the 21st Century Workplace, they must learn to collaborate. With a 3D printer, students will work together to explore, discuss, plan, and implement 3D projects that demonstrate a working knowledge of classroom content. Moreover, today's society rewards creativity and those who think outside the box. This being so, students will be able to use their prior knowledge of classroom content, or schema, to construct, create, and design 3D representations of themes, characters, figurative language, setting, and other plot elements. The options are literally endless. Likewise, critical thinking is a skill all employers value. To this end, students will use 3D printing to evaluate and interpret their understanding of classroom content, as well as show relationships between ideas being taught in the classroom. Finally, students will benefit from learning an emerging form of technology that is currently being implemented in all facets of industry and manufacturing, thus making them more employable, and therefore positive, contributing members of society.
