For the past 6 months, my students and I have been learning together through computer screens. I am so proud of the love of reading and writing they have developed, even through distance learning and online reading sources/texts. There is, however, something magical about holding an actual paper back book as you are taken into the world of the book: the smell of the new pages, the feel of the crisp pages at your fingertips, the physical action of placing your favorite bookmark to mark your spot in your book. My students have enjoyed a variety of genres of texts together, and we have bonded through the life lessons we have learned through the characters we have connected with. The novel, "Save me a Seat," is a powerful book centered upon acceptance, compassion, diversity, and standing up for what is right-perfect messages that would wrap up our school year together. As our school moves into a hybrid model with some in class and some remaining at home for distance learning, this book would serve as a common language to keep us all connected.
