Language development begins with understanding. Children understand what objects are and what they do by exploring and playing with them. Language is a powerful way to communicate and interact with your environment. For children with limited joint attention and verbal expression, communication with others is a challenge. Teaching language by using books and tangible items helps make a meaningful, functional connection.
Interactive books are a great way to get the students involved and attending to a story while learning the language. Providing stories with familiar objects makes a connection with the home environment. In addition, having stories with characters representative of different cultures increases the likelihood of that connection. The books and picture cards requested will be used in developing literacy-language-based therapy for my students. Digital materials can be shared with families for practice in the home.
