Right now, our classroom library has some incredible books, but sadly they are hard to find. We need organization and a pleasant "book shopping" experience to encourage more reading!
My goal for our classroom library is to be organized much like a regular library that will engage growing readers. Books will be labeled by color code for fiction and an easy Dewey Decimal System-like format for nonfiction. Students will be able to find books so much more quickly and easily with this system in place. Book bins will also be utilized for popular books series and authors. Bins will have large, colorful labels that will match labels on the books.
Book return will be a snap! When students are finished with a book, they will simply be able to go to the bookshelves and place it within the same color range that matches the label on the spine of their book. This will help tremendously with keeping our library organized and easy to use.
Not only will our new, organized library encourage students to read by helping students find books of interest more easily, but students will be learning the organizational systems that libraries use as well. This will be an invaluable skill as students use libraries more independently as they grow up.
