When my students finally enter my classroom for the first time, I want to be able to offer them a Native Language Class Library. Not only is it important to support and celebrate students' native cultures, there is also a strong connection between reading comprehension in one's first language, and acquiring a new language.
Far from home, my students have limited access to books in their native tongues - Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian Creole and French. To support their acquisition of English, I want to encourage healthy reading habits, especially reading for fun! This means reading in one's native language! With our Native Language Classroom Library, my students will be able to choose a book that interests them, and learn to read for pleasure.Â
Reading for pleasure is beneficial for all learners - it improves our vocabulary, reduces stress, fosters creativity, and makes us better writers. This is true for English Learners, too! Plus, reading in one's native language increases our phonological awareness which makes us better able to learn a new language.Â
