By understanding how to play chess, my students will focus on other subjects like math and reading. The rigor and patience that is needed to play will also be reflective in understanding how STEM works. My students are very bright, but they don't have the ability to focus or the patience to understand long-term strategies. I have many students who have asked me to coach and play chess after school. Some are a novice, and some are intermediate players. Because of no funding, I was not able to give my full attention to the game. We played with kiddie pieces, and it's time to play with heavy and professional pieces.
