My second graders' favorite time of the day is our reading block when I do a read-aloud and my students get a chance to read on their own. My students come from an area where they do not usually interact with diverse communities that are different from themselves. I want them to be able to experience a variety of perspectives and diverse experiences through a new classroom library! I am a new teacher, so my classroom library is already minimal. I would love to be able to start my classroom library with a wide variety of diverse books at a 2nd grade reading level. I chose books mainly by authors of color, so that the experiences of the characters in the books are based in truth. The books range from being fun and silly to deep and meaningful.
