I'm working to grow the capacity of our extracurricular program that takes students on a character-building outdoor education trip to the backcountry of Utah. Because most school-based trips are unaffordable for our students, we developed this five-day trip to be accessible to all of our students.
Because 75% of our student body falls below the poverty line and 13% of our students are considered homeless, we need to grow the availability of gear that students can use, overall making this experience more accessible to all students by removing barriers for participation. Currently, we are limited by what we can offer to students. The water bottles and sporks will be checked out to students to use for the week. We need a new tent to replace an old and worn out one we are still using. The stoves and water filter will be used by students on our most remote backcountry camping where we are on Bureau of Land Management public lands that have no services. Fulfilling each of these requests will help us provide a better experience and increase accessibility at the same time.
