That is the reality for one of the most energetic and intelligent second graders I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. My student was diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos, a rare genetic disorder which primarily affects the student's vision and hearing. Even with corrective lenses, my student is only able to read objects that are only inches away from her face. My student's corneas are so paper-thin that an activity such as rubbing her eyes could tear them, leaving the child permanently blinded. The amount of composure and maturity that has been shown by the student is amazing. My student simply refers to her eyes as being "fragile" and knows that she must be more careful than an eight year old should ever be expected to be. Along with this maturity comes superior intelligence. She is already reading chapter books that are years ahead of her time, but the strain that this reading puts on her eyes is further damaging to her vision.
