I am currently a new teacher who is going to be starting this Fall 2021 as a 3rd/4th grade teacher in Mild to Moderate Special Education for the Fresno Unified School District. I am extremely excited and nervous for this next monumental step in my life and career and want to share some of my thoughts from my own personal experience of being a student in the public education system and having experience currently teaching in the public education field.
I believe the books in my classroom should reflect the unique experiences, traditions, and cultures of my students and your donations will allow me to do that. I find that students who do not have the resources to help promote their growth in education and life are failed miserably by the system set in place and deserve the right to be educated regardless of race, gender, and disability.
The disproportionality in special education is something that I hold near and dear to my heart and an issue that needs to be addressed and that I believe starts with the teachers in the classroom, who plants the seeds of knowledge and tends to the minds of the future. With the help of the public, I wish to bring to light these underrepresented children and to bring an education that these children deserve through the donations of the public for more inclusive material, more resources to strive in the classroom, and content that would ensure any child of any background can get an education that they deserve.
