Each year, we teach an historical fiction unit in our reading classes. It is an opportunity for students to learn about themselves and the world by experiencing what was. We have been bothered by the fact that many of our books are not historically accurate, culturally responsive and not all that interesting.
We want new books for our historical fiction unit that better represent our student body and are more culturally and historically accurate so that our students can better appreciate their own amazing histories. We want them to be excited about jumping into these books and learning from the past.
The money from this project will allow us to purchase 84 new books - students will read 14 new books in book clubs and replacements for a few misplaced books from previous sets.
