Children’s books can serve as windows or mirrors. Unfortunately students who are not white have too many windows and not enough mirrors in children’s literature. This project aims to remedy that problem by providing a rich classroom library with a multitude of representations of family, culture, religion, and nationality.
Through daily read-alouds, I will use this library to help children see themselves and their peers in the stories we immerse ourselves in. We will use these books to dive into worlds that reflect what the children in my classroom know and love, which will deepen our learning and our community. Deep discussions will stimulate their thinking as global citizens, future activists, and readers.
