In my Essential Elements classroom, we have students who have diverse health, behavioral, and emotional needs. I have a room for my students to go, but it is dull, dark, and lacks the atmosphere that my students need for a calming break away from the noise of my classroom. We are busy learning from bell to bell and some of these students need a break from the noise and bluster of a moving classroom. We earn breaks in our classroom by completing goals and work. This space, while away from the noise of the classroom is not as rewarding and motivating as I would like it to be. It would bring a motivational element to the break room and help them learn to advocate for themselves. Several of my students are learning how to communicate their needs and wants with an AAC device. They need motivational items to encourage desire to communicate with teachers and classmates. I believe a swing, sounds, and other sensory items will be a great way to motivate all of the students in my classroom to ask for a break session after their work is accomplished. This will in turn help them to stay calm enough to continue their classroom work during the day without the behaviors that sometimes hinder learning.
