"Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are." –Mason Cooley.
For the littles, this world offers magical and infinite experiences. However, as we've all experienced over the past year, the world has been quite small and new experiences have been few and far between. It's my hope as a special education first-year teacher to provide a learning environment that is full of wonder as my students return to school, some even taking their first steps ever into a classroom.
My self-contained special education class ranges from students in kindergarten to 2nd grade that face academic and emotional challenges that can make learning very difficult. I would love to offer my students as many hands-on opportunities as possible through the use of manipulatives and tools for visual and kinesthetic learning.
Many of my students are new readers or struggling to read. The ability to read is such a gift that is automatic for so many of us. I am hoping to build a library that celebrates my students' cultures, teaches social-emotional skills, and offers books for even my earliest readers.
