Research has proven that flexible seating improves engagement and decreases behavior issues in class. By providing my students with several options for flexible seating, I will be able to give them the chance to learn in a way that is suitable to each individual. Flexible seating gives students an alternative to traditional desks. Choices include, but are not limited to; excercise balls, stools, yoga mats, wobble stools, and lap desks. Traditional desks are always available to students, but this way every kid can succeed. Students need the ability to use their stored energy without becoming a distraction to the class. Wobble stools and excercise balls allow students to bounce and move while maintaining focus on instruction. Lap desks, pillows, and stools give students the chance to comfortably work independently. Providing several options allows each teacher to implement flexible seating without causing conflict between students. This project will benefit three classes of 4th grade students teaching all subjects. We are excited to provide a learning environment that meets student's needs while keeping them engaged during learning. It is our belief (through extensive research) that, by providing flexible seating, our students will enter the classroom focused and excited to learn.
