On my campus we have a wonderful cool down room that has been successful in helping my students calm down so we can work together to solve problems. However, it can sometimes be difficult getting to the cool down room. I would love to have a cool down box in my room to make this strategy more accessible to them.
I want to foster independence in my students. During morning meetings we have discussed feeling emotions mildly and strongly. When we are feeling emotions strongly this may stop us from being able to complete tasks or solve problems. My goal is to teach my students how to independently recognize how they are feeling, what level they are feeling that emotion at (mild or strong), and how to bring that emotion from strong to mild in order to complete a task or solve a problem.
