Reading is a vicarious experience. As students dive into a book, they begin striving to understand the characters, their points of view, and identify themes and morals. It's an opportunity to peek into another person's experience all while developing empathy and understanding.
As a first year teacher, I want to create a classroom library that helps my students understand others and open up a discussion for life topics. As a result, the books that I'm choosing to buy will act as a window into cultures and lifestyles my students may not be familiar with. Fostering an inclusive library is just one of the ways I will help my students learn about racism, culture, disabilities, family lifestyles, etc.
I see it as one of my responsibilities to open up the conversation, and these books provide me a platform to do so.
