Our goal is to fund the expansion of the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classroom libraries, with special attention to the needs and wants of our ESOL population, as they comprise the largest group in our building.
Motivating students to read more frequently is very important, and one of the largest roadblocks in this area is that students often cannot relate to a book. Reading stories containing known settings, relatable characters, and familiar cultural experiences makes stories more accessible to reluctant readers.
We also would like to include bilingual books for our students with lower English proficiency, so that their native language can help them assimilate new vocabulary on their own. These books will be used not only for independent reading but also incorporated into small group sharing activities and daily summary journals.
