Our class has 'adopted' a bulletin board in the school hallway, and dubbed it "Where is the SMath?" We are posting pictures (so far that I have taken) for other classes and students to ponder - looking for the math and science in the photographs of real objects. Our school has about 400 students in a close-knit community. 75% of my students are Hispanic. 25% are multi-racial. School-wide approximately 60% are Hispanic, primarily from Mexico. We are a Title One school, with free/reduced lunch rate fluctuating between the 80-90%. Florida is one of the hardest hit states in the economic recession. Our education budget has been slashed, so supplies such as cameras to explore local landforms, architecture, historical sites, flora and fauna, simply do not exist. My students love it when I take pictures of our in-class work, and I would like to expand this so they can become the photographers and tap into their natural curiosity about the world and promote the cross-curricular connections.
