Our school is located on the south side of Minneapolis. We have a lovely school facing the Mississippi River and our grounds include World War II era Community Gardens (Victory Gardens). We are an environmental science magnet school with a greenhouse and student planted and managed gardens. I have a class of usually between six and ten students with developmental disabilities (this coming year I have seven so far). They have disabilities such as Down Syndrome and autism as well as very rare chromosomal and other diseases. Some have physical or sensory disabilities in addition to their cognitive (learning) disabilities and they learn in ways that are quite different from typical students. Most of my students live in poverty and many have families that have come here from other countries (including Somalia and Egypt). They are all wonderful students who want to learn and love coming to school.
