I work at a very nice school site with a diverse population. I am challenged in finding interventions for my struggling readers which include speech impairments and English Language Learners. My kindergarteners face challenges such as split custody families and many must go back and forth to different homes during the week and take different transportation to school on a daily basis. I strive to give the students consistency in the classroom. My students enjoy songs and dance, interactive reading, and hands on activities. Many of my students did not score in the top range of our state reading assessment given mid-year and I am concerned about their skills in phoneme blending, reading fluency and comprehension. It is evident that most of my students are not getting the attention they need at home and I attribute this to almost 100% of parents working full-time.
