I teach in a very low-income, low-performing school in Maryland. Most of the students are immigrants, some here legally and some here that are not. My students struggle with life's basics needs. The meals they have at school are often the only ones they will have all day. BUT...my kids are FANTASTIC!!! They want to learn. They want to improve. They want to achieve. But, many do not have the help at home to continue the work we do here at school!! Many of the parents I meet are not literate in their own language, let alone literate in English. Many of my students live altogether with numerous family and extended family, often in limited space.
