Teaching students from diverse backgrounds is, in a word, rewarding. Students do not always feel they are being rewarded however, so it is important to immerse them in actual hand-on learning.
Living learning provides students the opportunity to actually love and empathize with other living organisms that rely on them to survive.
Learning to provide for and connect with creatures outside their living realm through care, support, and enrichment will teach students the value of connection that isn't necessarily part of standard curriculum.
The bottom line is that caring for others build character and teaches lessons about how our actions affect other living things.
