The use of headphones is a daily requirement in my classroom, especially during our Reading Intervention block. During the Reading Intervention block students are engaging in leveled reading activities; its like having your very own teacher all to yourself. Each student is able to complete a variety of activities that increase reading fluency and stamina. Many of these activities require students to utilize headphones. The headphones allow students to hear and interact with the activities on a deeper level. What becomes a problem is the fact that all the students in the class are all using the platforms for intervention at the same time. Imagine different computers, doing different things, saying different things, all at the same time. Many students are also required to read a passage aloud and listen to the playback. When all of this is going on, students cannot hear their own instructions on their computer, record their reading, or listen to playbacks. Often times students are missing out on pertinent information and instruction, simply because they cannot hear. They end up having to repeat a level or get frustrated because they can't hear. Even though they are great about rolling with the punches, it is distracting for many of my students who have focusing issues and they miss important instruction. By having headphones students will be able to avoid all of these problems and focus on increasing their learning!
