This is a year long project: Making Chinese Bamboo Slip Books and Thread Binding Books. Learning Chinese characters is challenging, and it requires a lot of practice. This project is for Chinese students of all levels. For beginning learners, students can learn how to write and recognize Chinese characters while writing them on bamboo/wooden sticks. In this way, they are not just mechanically writing the characters, but instead making art books that can be used for flash cards/dictionaries. For intermediate and advanced students, they can create their own Chinese poems and stories while making the books.
Throughout this project they will learn about the rich culture and history of China, as well as make Chinese art, and increase their knowledge of the Chinese language. The intentionality and mindfulness used in writing the characters in this activity can enhance students’ memory around Chinese vocabulary and better integrate information about character writing. Students will read their peers’ books and evaluate their work. They will present their finished products at the Chinese New Year festivals held at school and in the community.
