My current students were just 3-4 years old when the COVID pandemic began. For close to half of their lives, their opportunities for peer interaction have been curtailed. For many of them, kindergarten is their first exposure to a formal academic setting of any kind; they skipped preschool completely due to COVID concerns, and with it they missed out on a wealth of engaging activities and interactions with their peers. As a teacher, my concern is for the development and well-being of the whole child, not just academically, but physically, socially, and emotionally as well.
Children of this age learn best by doing, by being actively engaged in meaningful, hands-on experiences. The materials listed in this project will help me create an engaging and playful kindergarten classroom where students can not only develop necessary STEM and literacy skills, but also the social and interpersonal skills necessary to navigate life.
