Energy is a concept that is taught throughout middle grades science. The activities in this unit will include the construction of a Rube Goldberg system as well as lab investigation centered around making an action figure jump higher. The materials will allow the students to act as the scientists and the investigators who construct models to show their understanding proven by evidence. They will also continuously make references and collaborate with their peers through the use of the whiteboard contact paper attached to the tables.
When students actively engage in hands-on experiences that relate to the curriculum, they have a higher chance of making connections to standards and the meaning of vocabulary words. Oftentimes, students miss out on this opportunity due to a lack of resources as well as at-home exposure.
