Only 7-10% of Deaf High School graduates read above a 7th grade level. Most read at a 4th grade level when graduating. The grammar of American Sign Language and English are different. This means that Deaf students are reading and writing in their second language. It is so hard for them. The sentence builder will help my student understand the grammar structure of English in a fun manner. I want my student to develop a love for reading at a young age. These books will allow my student to have a variety of books to choose from that have characters that represent him.
Imagine never seeing anyone like you in any book or out in society. My student has never seen someone with a cochlear like him in books or in life. I believe with these books he will develop a sense of belonging and will not feel so isolated anymore.
