I was hired to teach American Literature. When I was handed the list of pre-approved and syllabus-ready books, I was disappointed. As much as I adore Edgar Allan Poe, Frederick Douglass, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Richard Wright, and many others I did not see the diversity in ethnicity, religion, or gender that I was hoping to see. I just don't feel that I am doing the title "American Literature" justice by only teaching novels written before 1970 and written primarily by men. Thankfully, I found that our library does stock Amy Tan's "Joy Luck Club" and Lorraine Hansberry's play "Raisin in the Sun." I believe by adding in Cisneros' novel I will be able to kick start a more diverse and well-rounded curriculum that is worthy of the title "American Literature."
