My students need flexible options for their learning environment. When students have a say in where and how they will learn, they take ownership of the process. Some of us work best standing, laying down, listening to music, or a multitude of other options. Children are no different.
Independence, collaboration, and increased focus are all potential outcomes of flexible seating. The products I have selected to create a room with many choices for seating include wiggle seats and balance balls. In my 4 years of teaching 1st grade, I have observed how many of them need to be moving or engaging their body to focus and learn. I believe these seating options will make that a productive reality for these young learners. I have also chosen some unique desks that allow students to sit close to the floor and rock while working on a stable surface. Additionally, I have included comfortable floor cushions for students to use when working on the floor and for easy portability to collaborate with peers.
This project will arm my children with independence, empowerment, and focus to learn effectively.
