Imagine having to work at home. Where do you complete the majority of your work? Imagine reading a book at home. Where do you read at home? Imagine using a smart device at home. Where do you use your device?
Chances are you are in different locations to complete each task. Chances are one of those tasks takes place in a comfortable 鈥淪.E.A.T.鈥 Now imagine you can only be in one room to complete all your tasks. Now imagine you can only sit in a cold hard chair.
This is why I would like to give student choice in seating.

Student-centered Engagement: when you get to pick your spot to work, your engagement will naturally improve. When engagement improves, quality of learning naturally improves.
Student-centered Arrangement: when students choose whom they collaborate with, collaboration improves. When collaboration improves, learning improves. Or maybe you prefer to sit in a quiet spot on your own. Either way, the arrangement is up to you.
Student-centered Temperament: community is why our classroom is successful. We love like family. We feel like family. The energy given off by student temperature can control the room more than a thermostat. When you are comfortable, you are in a better mood. When the mood remains positive, energetic, and warm in a classroom, the love is stronger. When students are loved and valued, they feel safe. Feeling safe allows you to take risks. Risks are the sweet spot to growth.
