The materials and supplies I'm requesting for my students will be housed in our classroom in their very own space. I've designated a specific area in our room for this new "Makers Space" I'd like to incorporate, in order to enhance the learning experiences of my students; I just need your help supplying the materials and storage!
This maker space will be a place where students will be able to go to let their imaginations run wild. The purpose of a maker space or STEM lab is to allow students to enter with an idea (related to the content that is being taught during whole group instruction), have an opportunity to explore their interests, and develop a creative project or proposal. Students will use materials such as LEGO, K'nex, straw constructors, Kinetic Sand, Play-Doh, Wiki Stix, and other various art supplies to design and engineer projects that answer real world problems in areas such as reading, math and science. My plan is to use this area as a rotation during centers, a place where students can go during free time to get creative, or an area for quick finishers to go and continue working on a project.
The best part, especially for my collaborative students, is that this is a communal space where they will be applying what they know to solve problems or tasks by working together and using their imaginations -- all while learning!
A successful in-school makers space provides students with a variety of tools and materials and the freedom to create-- this is where we need your help! It's impossible for one teacher to fund a space like this, but such a space would make an incredible difference in the learning experience of my students!
