I want my students to see the identities, realities and experiences of themselves, their families, and their communities reflected in texts that we read in the classroom. I've carefully selected books that I hope will affirm student identities while also importantly fostering their love for reading. I also want to expose students to a variety of forms of writing so they can explore using different styles in their own creative writing. Books such as "The Poet X" and "They Call me Güero" use poetry, and "Feathered Serpent, Dark Heart of Sky" explores traditional Mexican myths. I am also requesting paint since I plan to start the year with an identity unit in which students will create self/identity portraits.
