My junior high students typically do not enjoy reading, especially not unless the novel relates to them in some way or is about a topic they enjoy. All of these books in this project do just that: They all relate to my students demographic, disability, age, economic status, family status, and so much more. Some novels even have a “secret” meaning as well to help students see life outside of our small town as they are written by African-Americans and discuss various races, genders, disabilities, world history, and much more.
