My students with special needs will learn independent living skills. My students will learn how to separate their clothes and learn how to operate a washer and dryer. We will learn about the best settings for different types of clothes. We will discuss couponing and the costs for detergent and dryer sheets. Students will also learn how to fold their clothes. Some students do have accidents and this would make it easier to wash and send clean clothes home.
My students cook in class as another way to work on transition skills. The dishwasher will add another step in kitchen duties. Clean up would be much smoother if students can help load a dishwasher versus washing by hand. Some students struggle with the detail orientation and fine motor skills that is needed to wash by hand. Loading a dishwasher is a great modification for most students in class. Learning how to use a dishwasher will also open job opportunities and another independent living skill.
