My school enforces standardized or district testing monthly, on top of frequent unit tests and exit tickets (every other day, seemingly). I don't want school to be something my students dread, whether it's because of burnout or the pressure to perform well and prove their worth. These items will help build a fun, safe space for learning while simultaneously eliminating distractions with flexible seating (stability balls) and attention-getting buzzers. They will incentivize my students to work hard and play hard so that each day is something consistently magical.
My hope is that these colorfully engaging tools will aid in increased learning, growing excitement, and powerful lasting memories.
During virtual teaching, we had Karaoke Session every Friday for morning meeting, and I witnessed how my students would wildly crave a chance to sing in front of their classmates, coming out of their shells and exuding confidence no matter their skill levels. Peers encouraged and supported their friends who took the brave step forward. The listed microphone will make for the best karaoke sessions and the flashing lights will create the dance party they've always wanted. The Play-Doh and crayons will be used to stimulate creativity as we participate in art challenges and incentivize students to finish their work as a fun center. The cart will help keep these resources organized in the classroom and easy to transport in between periods.
My kids need to be kids, and unfortunately, they had to miss an integral part of their social development due to COVID-19 and online learning. I noticed a substantial difference in my students' academic progress based on whether or not they have found joy in the classroom.
This project is simple enough: to create, cultivate, and cause a rippling effect of joy so that my scholars can reach their full potential.
