You only get better at something if you practice it, so students in my classroom will be required to read, read, and read some more! I also want my students to expand the genres they read in order to practice a variety of reading skills and strategies.
Fifth grade students tend to stick with books in one series or genre and are missing out on what the other genres have to offer. My students visit the library once each week, but I want my students to have greater access to books. I have stacks of boxes of books, but the reading material is not accessible to my students right now. In order to facilitate this love of reading and give students a way to achieve the requirements I will set for them, I need to organize the library of books I own. The bookshelves will give the books a home, the notebooks will give the students a way to respond to and think about their reading, and the tape will provide an easy way to mark and organize the books by genre so that students can find and reshelve books without my help. I hope my reading plans for this year will open up new worlds to my students and give them the practice needed to leave fifth grade as well-rounded readers who can use their reading skills to learn and succeed anywhere in life!
